96.000 residents living at 96 squarekilometers and in 15 districts of Bergheim. So Bergheim is behind Stadt Kerpen the second biggest city of the rural district Rhein-Erft-Kreis.

Bergheim was mentionend in a certification in which the brother of the count platine Ezzo, Herzelin, who gives the lordship of Bergheim to the count platine Ezzo. 

In the 13. century the earls of Jülich have the lordship of Bergheim and allowed them to build a castle including a residental estate. Later the city Bergheim arises from here and was mentioned in 1312 for the first time. A rectangular castle wall and two citygates surrounded Bergheim in the Middle Ages. Caused of the stratetic lodation Bergheim was also station for coins and custom of the earls of Jülich. 

Bergheim was destroyed 1542 by the war between Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, and his territorial sovereigns and couldn´t become for a long time the important which it had reached before. Bergheim got the titel "Kreisstadt Bergheim" in 1816, when the Prussians get the power and with the titel the funtion as the superordinated administration city. Since 1993 Bergheim is  the place of residence of  the rural district"Rhein-Erft-Kreis".
